my one word for 2016….CHOOSE

We are well on our way into the New Year…it’s 2016 and I have ushered my littles off to school again for another semester and found my comfortable spot at Starbucks to stop and reflect.

So often we start out each New Year with great goals, “resolutions,” great intentions to do great things, and come February we beat ourselves up when we haven’t quite made it. In years past I have made my own resolutions, only to break them within days, if not weeks, of a new year peeking through. So this year I did not resolve to do anything….instead I am focusing on a word to be a banner over my year.

My word for 2016 is CHOOSE.

As I think about the word choose and how it can shape my year…many forms of this word roll off my lips.

Choose….I choose joy. I choose peace. It means that even in the midst of the mess, the hard places in life, I choose to get up out of bed each morning and be present in my life. I get to choose whether or not I join into an argument or whether I remain silent. I choose to let go of the things that hinder me in my daily life and choose to allow more of the things that breathe life into me to be the pervasive factor in my days. I choose to be the eternal optimist that I am and still, no matter what, find the good in all things. I choose more Jesus. Always. I choose to believe that there is still good in the world, even when I watch the news, even when all around us it seems things continue to get worse. I choose to love deeply, even if that means getting hurt. I choose to be vulnerable, here and in my daily life as I come across people. Being vulnerable opens us up to hurt, but also opens us up to being known. I choose to stop and listen if someone needs an ear. I choose to always love without judgment. I choose to slow down on busy days and soak them in, they are fleeting and we aren’t guaranteed a tomorrow. I choose life….and the beautiful mess that comes with that. I choose to be all in.

I want this year to be a year that I continue to be open and choose to be present in all that I do. I don’t want another resolution of eating better, running more, or stopping a bad habit, not that any of those are bad. I just want to go deeper in life this year. I want to look back and have lived each day this year, not simply wished them away for the next day.

If you had to pick one word that defines 2016 for you….what will it be?

  1. Mine will be “peace”, to find the peace in it all, and to find The Prince of Peace in it…
